What I Actually Bought #051
Craigslist Fred Again tix, hydroponic indoor gardens, and Kewpie mayo baby phone cases
Fred Again not only graced the Bay this week but headlined Stanford’s annual Frost (an outdoor concert organized by a student-run group). Chloe decided to join friends at the 11th hour and resorted to getting a ticket on Craigslist (scored an entry but not without a predictable fiasco). Word on the quad is that Fred’s younger sister has her sights set on Stanford, so he went above and beyond, running a THREE-day performance here (instead of Frost’s usual one-day gigs). After all, sweat equity is the preferred currency in the college admissions game… or is it?
Meanwhile, Claire pulled up to her high school reunion last weekend, only to realize that 5 years is not nearly enough time to tweak, let alone cast off our past identities. Try again in 10?
On that note, let’s get to OUR finds, YOUR finds, and the BEST DEALS — honest reviews backed by receipts. Let’s do this…
What I Actually Bought
Givenchy Asymmetric Lock Earring (similar here here and here): Chloe has been eyeing these earrings for a year now… with minimal luck in the secondhand market. Really into the clunky hardware and she’s a metals mixer when it comes to jewelry stacking. This set alone retails for $620, but we found a lone earring on eBay for $85. Mismatched is the new match anyway ;)
Andover White Hoodie: Quintessential (if not requisite) nostalgia-fueled merch purchase upon return to the old stomping grounds. Indeed, some
thingspeople never change. Same inside jokes, same rivalries, same high jinks. You can take the student out of boarding school…Larq Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle: Saw a few classmates at lectures sporting these and decided to take a page from their playbook. Claire’s notorious for her upset stomach issues (should really be a poster child for Tums at this rate). For this, she was recently granted an unsolicited medical diagnosis from a certain “athlete-scholar” friend: subpar hydration habits may be the cause of Claire’s digestive woes. The new goal is 100 oz of daily water intake — so 4 of these bad boys. The neat built-in spout feature makes this a bona fide sippy cup lol. Might be regressing, but at least it will add some fun to this mundane activity. Will report back on the said stomach issues.
Pure Encapsulations Magnesium: Claire thought she was being super cost-effective by canceling her Lumity subscription and buying these pure magnesium pills instead. Reality check: Penny-pinching often comes with a hidden price. This brand pales in comparison to Lumity… so now, the jar of these pure magnesium pills sits untouched on her nightstand, a visual reminder that not all savings are worth the sacrifice.
Céleste Wine Bar: Chloe and our brother had a rendezvous in SF this past weekend at a relatively new wine bar in Cow Hollow. It’s a fun post-work drink spot. Fake French vibes for sure — patrons included a guy with the words ‘Le Fou’ tattooed on his hand. Nice.
What YOU Actually Bought
@junialin (creative director (often working with her twin sister Laufey!), creator, digital marketing strategist) / Gucci Horsebit Burgundy 1955 Shoulder Bag via Ella Rue in DC (similar here here and here): “For my 25th birthday, I wanted to solidify my ~ bagsonality~. I needed something that could fit in with both my drastic outfits as well as my more toned-down, classic outfits. I also wanted something that fit a book. I also couldn’t choose between a shoulder bag and a crossbody. This Gucci satchel did all of the above 🌷🌷”
@liveeatlearn (nutritionist, food scientist) / AeroGarden Hydroponic Indoor Garden: “I found that I was always buying herbs at the grocery store and then they would get all wilty in the fridge before I had the chance to use them. So basically, this thing has already paid for itself! The only problem is the herbs just want to grow so quickly that I can’t keep up. The fill grew to be about 3 feet tall! 😂”
@sovradosaggio (model, writer of ) / Wildflower Lil Devil iPhone Case: ”everything started with me looking for a cheap cover on amazon and ended up spending 50 bucks on a case imported from the US lol. i love it because i'm gawky and it looks clumsy-proof enough, it reminds me of kewpie mayo (i'm obsessed with it what can i do) and it reflects 100% my chaotic evil energy.”
@aaronstern__ (artist, curator, author, writer Another Newsletter ) / Hokkaido by Daido Moriyama: “I bought a Daido Moriyama book at the New York Art Book Fair in April from Akio Nagasawa Gallery. I've always liked his work— but I bought it because it was printed xerox like my show, Hard Copy, which is up right now.”
@freyadro (writer, editor, fashion director, stylist) / Vintage Matthew Williamson Silk Dresses (other options here here and here): “If you know me, you know I'm a dress fanatic. Over the last few years, I've pivoted to only collecting 2000s-era pieces. One name who my beady eyes are always on the lookout for is Matthew Williamson, who (sadly) stopped making clothes in 2016. His collections for his own label and during his time at Pucci shaped my love for vibrant, bohemian fashion growing up and when I get my hands on one now, those memories come flooding back. Given his background as a textile designer, his prints feel unrivaled.”
