What I Actually Bought #054
Jagger Juggernaut, the host of Boy Room tells all, and balsamic bliss
When our dad rocked our world with tickets to The Rolling Stones concert at Soldier Field in Chicago this past week, we barely knew that Mick Jagger was the man behind the legendary band. An embarrassing hiccup in cultural trivia we know…We did kinda recognize some iconic lines like “Start Me Up” or “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and grew up with Adam Levine’s reference to “Moves Like Jagger,” but we didn’t quite grasp the magnitude of Mick’s or the band’s colossal star power till last Thursday when we witnessed them in action.
They blew us away. Didn’t take a seasoned (Rolling) stoner to realize that the energy, chemistry, and passion behind Mick’s (at 80!!) prancing/dancing/flailing were second to none. In other words, you don’t have to be their #1 fan to give credit where credit is due. The concert was basically a masterclass on how to defy age lol. For founders like yours truly, “Start Me Up” and “Mess It Up” have struck a chord and been stuck on our Spotify repeat.
On that note, let’s get to OUR finds, YOUR finds, and the BEST DEALS — honest reviews backed by receipts. Let’s do this…
What I Actually Bought
Vacation Classic Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50: We’ve become bona fide sunscreen gurus since our viral TikTok lol and have had many opps to try others since. Vacation kindly sent us their product line a few months ago and we’re now re-stocking their SPF 50 sunblock. We love Vacation because it’s not too thick, doesn’t make us break out, and smells like summer (read: coconuts).
Chi Grape Sparkling Water: Discovered this drink at a Korean food court in VA last year and been hooked ever since. Super sparkly/bubbly with 0 sugar, 0 calories. Diamond in the rough: Chi in Chi.
Missoni Pink Coverup (secondhand options here here here here and here, matching shorts here): Claire can’t resist a good Missoni chevron for the days on the beach... The question is not if, but how low she can go to procure one. Depending on the season, you can either make it out like a bandit (winter) or get the dregs of NAP/Revolve summer sale items (summer) at best. So imagine her surprise/excitement when she was able to snag the last pink coverup from Yoox at a quarter of the retail price.
Sugar Shack: Known for their funnel cake sundaes. Craving something sweet, we ventured out to this ice cream walk-up window in Chicago only to find the line snaking around the block. We were tempted by their soft serve with cereal add-ons (cinnamon toast crunch and fruity pebbles). Hit the sweet spot, but it didn’t come in a cone or a swirl. In other words, close but no cigar.
A Philosophy of Walking: Your Selleb Sisters are back in NYC this week, and they’re strolling down memory lane. Claire stopped by McNally Jackson, of course, for the compulsory hour of literary wandering — a sacred ritual that never disappoints. She walked away with this book because…how fitting. Looked like a quick and fun summer read for your step-tracking addict. Will report back what she uncovers about walking <> as a metaphor for life. Cheers to that.
What YOU Actually Bought
@rachelcoster (comedian, host of viral @boyroomshow) / 1 Gallon Water Bottle with Time Marker: “I am like bad at everything on planet earth except for comedy, sex, and going to the beach. I’ve never met anyone better at going to the beach except this one really leathery old gay guy at Jacob riis beach who I think maybe lives there. The only stuff you need to have the most amazing experience is a suit, neutrogena 70 spf sunblock in the yellow container (lotion only, spray gets lost in the wind), and a huge water bottle. If you have a bad time at the beach it’s either because ur friends suck or ur not hydrated and this massive water bottle is my key to the hydration gates. it’s prob toxic it’s not particularly sturdy (my last one broke cuz I dropped it really hard) and it’s not cute but it is BIG and that is legit sometimes all you need. Sorry it’s from Amazon i am an imperfect person.”
@brittanyhoffner (actress and model) / 1970 Electrohome 711 Saturn Record Player via Mercari (similar here and here): “I’ve been wanting this record player forever. For years now… which justifies me spending absurd amount of money on it. But the thing is with vintage things comes many other expenses and for me… I still don’t even have speakers for it. And the records I own are as follows: 500 Days of Summer Soundtrack, Bon Iver For Emma, Forever Ago, and Mac Demarco’s first album. I love this record player even while unusable still - a good purchase 👍🏻”
@susanspungen (food writer (Open Kitchen), editor, food stylist, find her at ) / Guiseppe Guisti Italian Balsamic Wine Vinegar: “You can see how many times I’ve ordered it! I absolutely love this very good but not insanely expensive vinegar. There will be a lot of salads, especially tomato salads, coming up in the next few months, and this vinegar is essential. I could drink it.”
@gabyscelzo (writer and baker) / Roberto Cavalli Sunglasses (similar here here and here): “My chronic procrastination has taken more than it's given, but it did lead me to these flawless chocolate Cavalli sunglasses. A search for "pink wedding guest dresses" just a few days before a wedding led me to ThredUp, where I found a cute dress but needed to meet an order minimum to secure free overnight shipping. I tossed these sunglasses into my cart on a whim, but the moment I slid them on my face, they became one of the most important accessories in my wardrobe. I wear them every day and love wiping them with their leopard print cleaning cloth — everything about them makes me feel like I'm on The Simple Life.”
@onehandedoverdressed (model, disability advocate, writer ) / Vertigo Tigers Eye Choker: “If Marge Simpson was an influencer she’d be wearing a red jasper choker from Vertigo. I am obsessed with stone bead necklaces and was especially smitten with this one because of the magnetic clasp which allows me to put it on and take it off easily with one hand. I wore it recently to a work event in the Hamptons with a sheer dress and scarf tied around my waist and the magnetic clasp was secure all day long. It’s the perfect way to incorporate the red trend into my wardrobe of mostly neutral colors without overindulging.”
