What I Actually Bought #057
CrowdStrike strikes a Selleb Sister, Prime Day Roulette, and legendary fashion exec's (sun)screen saver
The CrowdStrike outage played out differently for your Selleb Sisters. Claire was left high low, dry, and bleary-eyed in Edinburgh. [Paid subs, stay tuned for a receipt-fueled guide to this city ;)] But with a stroke of Irish luck, she somehow Tetris’ed her way into the last available middle seat to ORD via DUB just one day later — pheww. Meanwhile, Chloe dodged the fiasco completely by leaving London 12 hours earlier, completely unscathed. Timing is everything.
Remains to be seen whether Aer Lingus will honor the EC 261 provision for canceled flights given the ~extraordinary circumstances~ of the IT outage but for Claire, the receipts of food, hotel, and misc. expenses have already been diligently screenshotted and a case meticulously filed for reimbursement. What better way to kill time than organizing personal finances when stranded at airports? Included below is 1 receipt from the weekend saga but she will hopefully, most likely (!) get reimbursed for some all.
On that wishful note, let’s dive into OUR finds, YOUR finds, and the BEST DEALS — the real stories behind our receipts. Prepare for the takeoff…
What I Actually Bought
Midnight feast & morning treat at Crowne Plaza Dublin: Despite Claire’s subterranean expectations for airport hotels, the Crowne Plaza in Dublin kinda aced it with flying colors. Room service at 1 AM after a whole day spent wrangling 3 suitcases between Prêt and the bathroom at EDI might have won her over regardless of the hotel in question, but the food here was objectively, surprisingly very good. And the breakfast buffet? They had her at fresh croissants. Unsurprisingly, the Irish oatmeal was 11/10, topped with a spoonful of honeycomb, hazelnuts, and other assortment of seeds to boot. Call her crazy, but Claire might not have minded spending another day/night here.
Amazon Prime Day Haul: The obligatory annual stock-up-on-everything-you-won’t-actually-need-for-another-3-months-but-oh-well-it’s-a-good-deal. Also a great time to play retail roulette with new products/brands while the prices are right and our wallets feel less. Shoutout to Claire’s friend India for the Clarins sunscreen rec which she swears by. Couldn’t locate them at the French pharmacies but thank god for Amazon? Also stocked up on Clean Skin towels, Fekkai shampoo/conditioner, secured a pretty fuego deal on Nutrafol pills, and also giving the Clarins lip perfector a go (wasn’t on sale, but another one of Claire’s friend Masa’s recs). Prime time, people.
Tate Collective: If you’re 25 and under, art-loving, and traveling to London, it’s well worth spending the 2 minutes signing up for the Tate Collective (free!). Instead of shelling out £20+ per special exhibit, you pay £5 a pop! HIGHLY recommend the Expressionists (currently on rotation) centered around The Blue Rider artist group. They emerged in the early 1900s and are known for their exploration of color, sound, and light. Just take a look at the beautiful works below!
Farm Shop UK: Come here for vibrant produce and a mean Coronation Chicken sandwich. The pastries were kind of dry by late morning so would skip.
5. Country Sun Natural Foods: Chloe is back in the Bay and back to her usual — Dram and Nora snacks never fail. What a duo. Can and will finish in one sitting.
What YOU Actually Bought
Fabiana (co-founder of Coming Soon) / mfpen Scene Trousers Brown Stripe (similar here and here): “My last purchase was this pair of pants from mfpen. It was perfect timing to have them. We were doing a photoshoot for the launch of Coming Soon's first own product called The Pill. And one of the people we had scheduled for the shoot canceled last minute so we had to be in the shoot and thankfully I happened to have the order with me to change into them and haven't stopped wearing them since.”
@elizabethvdg (fashion industry veteran (prev CEO of Browns, Farfetch exec, Matches exec), founding board member of RAISEfashion)) / Mecca Cosmetica Sunscreen: “I spend a lot of time in the sun as I love swimming long distances in the ocean. I have always been allergic to most sunblock and usually always break out with allergies or a rash but this Mecca To Save Face super sunscreen for the face is super soothing and super protective at the same time. It blends perfectly into the skin and I can use it every day for weeks and it doesn’t clog my pores at all.”
@sarahhendler (jewelry designer) / Land’s End Premium Supima Cotton Sheets: “Got the good word on these from Annie Meyers-Shyer who is a new friend of mine and daughter of amazing film director Nancy Meyers. Annie is remodeling a house and has a great instagram detailing it all. She also does great q&a’s where people ask her about all things “home”. She swears by these sheets. I bought them and am telling you WORTH IT. Price point is awesome.”
@ryderkramer (custom tailoring at J.Mueser) / Tartan Vintage Watch: “The watch is from Tartan Vintage, a very well known vintage store in Florence. The face of the watch is small, and unlike anything I’ve seen before. People always have something to say in regards to it: we call it the “hunky baby””
@krissy_jones (founder of Sky Ting) / Prada Gold Trench (similar here here here and here): “I am selecting my 2004 gold Prada trench that I’ve been searching for online for a long time. At long last she’s mine. It’s from such a special collection and I used my credit on the real real to buy her!”
