What I Actually Bought #064
Bottega brides, Substack Chat launch, Celebrity Memoir Book Club co-host spills
Selleb is a discovery app (currently in beta) where you can snoop on what the coolest people on the internet are ACTUALLY (!) buying/loving/consuming — with receipts to prove it. Call it (rear) window shopping on steroids. If you’re subscribed to our newsletter, you’re also automatically on the waitlist for app access. We hit your inbox twice a week. The Sunday edition serves up anything from travel to fashion to skincare to restaurants. The Wednesday edition features 5 tastemakers sharing receipts of things they’ve recently bought and the juicy stories behind them. Past guests have included Serena Kerrigan, Willa Bennett of Highsnobiety, Throwing Fits, Junia Lin, tinyjewishgirl, sssssoupsssss, Susan Alexandra, Jason Diamond, ellapottersays, Gia Kuan, Jeremy Cohen, hellotefi, dadaeats, the creators of Industry, the founders of MSCHF, StockX, Vine, Siberia Hills, etc... (See full roster here) Do you have someone you’d like to see featured? DM or email us at sisters@selleb.com.
Love is in the air, and your Selleb Sisters were right in the thick of it. What’s up with the labor of love around Labor Day? Whatever it is, something’s got people lining up to lock it down come early Sept — from our very own parents celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary to friends sealing the deal with fresh new vows. Yours truly had front-row seats to some incredibly beautiful celebrations this past weekend.
Claire saddled up as a +1 for a fabulous 3-day wedding out on a breathtaking ranch in Montana. Picture sunsets, horses, and hoedowns that gave Claire a chance to whip out her Filles à Papa cowboy boots (and other western-chic accessories in her closet) that had been gathering dust on equal footing as the Wild West herself.
Meanwhile, Chloe breezed into Chicago for what might have been just the most elegant wedding of the decade. Our friend Isabella N, an artiste extraordinaire, curated every single detail of her big event to perfection. She also upped the bridal ante with not one but TWO wedding looks that blew everyone away in the Windy City. What of her dresses? These were none other than custom creations by Bottega’s head chef, Blazy himself. Talk abut putting the wows in vows (his first time doing any kind of wedding dress — quite the inauguration). Bottega brides > > > The bar has officially been raised.
The Bottega bride is ultra-cool without being try-hard. The Bottega bride is modest but magnetic. The Bottega bride turns heads without even knowing it. The Bottega bride embodies movement and magic.
ALSO: Our Substack Chat is launching today! Please consider upgrading to a paid subscription here to show your support and become a member of our club (and core tribe 😘). Stoked about rolling out this new feature that provides space for our community to meet, exchange notes about products and trends, and be the first to know about any Selleb (app) announcements.
With that, let’s get to OUR finds, YOUR finds, and the BEST DEALS for the week. Let’s do this…
What I Actually Bought
314 Warren (Clic) Rainbow Llama & Catskills Candle: A trip upstate never hurt nobody. Claire stumbled into this store in Hudson, NY that felt like an eerily familiar ‘80s fever dream named Clic (a Selleb Sister fav store in Manhattan). Blame the signature cassette art, the quirky pastel glassware, and —llamas— for that. The kicker: because of its likeness (legal?) issues upstate, the store couldn’t rock the “Clic” moniker and had to re-brand to 314 Warren, a “sister” store instead. Same sh*t, different font? Fitting, then, that Claire would finally pull the trigger on an iconic Clic llama (albeit a small one to start), as well as add to the bday gift haul for Mom. The Catskills candle, as Selleb Mom would note, is reminiscent of the Baies with a pine twist. So, approved.
Nespresso Haul: With limited kitchen counter space in Claire’s temp NY apartment, she had to make the tough choice to only bring one coffee machine —the millennial Moccamaster has been benched for now. Call it a rotating custody arrangement, visitation rights pending. The one callout is the new pumpkin spice cake capsules. Claire’s fallin’ hard.
Faherty Sweatpants (similar here): Nothing like a men’s flash 70-80% sale to get the girlies going for more comfort-core they don’t need. Claire exercised restraint this time with only one resignation… in the form of Faherty sweatpants. Never would have given the brand a second look otherwise, but sometimes the right circumstances will make you do crazy-ish things. These are pretty damn comf/clutch ngl. Great men’s store btw if you’re ever in Chelsea — staff is awesome and will go above and beyond to find your stitch-mate.
Postscript in SF: If Erewhon and Foxtrot had a baby in SF.
Blink Twice movie: Hands down the worst movie of 2024. Someone had to say it. No subtlety, no subtext, and certainly no surprises. Reviews these days are too forgiving; only Reddit seems to be saying anything remotely true (see below). Our director seems to be making a statement about cancel culture/ #MeToo, but delivers it in the most beat-’em-over-the-head (quite literally) kind of way that is devoid of any intelligence, creativity, or artistry. Two thumbs down.
What YOU Actually Bought
@ashleyhammm (co-host of Celebrity Memoir Book Club, link to podcast here) / Gucci Silver Dial Quartz Watch (similar here here and here): “I discovered this watch on pinterest last year and became obsessed with it. I've been trying to shop way less so I just put everything on a list but I could not stop thinking about it. It also fully works which is amazing because the two other watches I own were passed down by my Grandma and I don't think they've had a working battery in them since the 90s so I've come to think of cool watches as more like time-themed jewelry. I might learn to tell time.”
@nickelcobalt (brand storytelling @buckmason, ) / GABA & L-Theanine Chocolate: “These GABA/L-Theanine chocolates are small enough that I can eat em in one bite, and it’s dark chocolate so it’s not sickeningly sweet. I grab one when I’m feeling the pressure of everything or whenever I’m just a little too anxious to sleep, and it really puts me at ease physically. I like that it’s not melatonin so I don’t get groggy afterwards. There’s only a few bad reviews where I think they just don’t understand what the words “dark chocolate” or “bite-size” mean.”
@elizabethgracehand (founder + esthetician @stallestudios
curation committee @violetgrey) / Sienna Miller’s Prada Snakeskin Mules (similar here and here): “i love these because they are the perfect pointed kitten heel — super long, very witchy, with a little square tip. the style i am perpetually searching for on every resale site. one of my earliest fashion memories was a pink bcbg version i strutted the halls of my middle school with. this python version couldn’t be more perfect. and according to this depop seller, they were previously owned by sienna miller, which we will obviously pretend is true.”@michaelakotob (photographer, creative consultant, freelance @costabrazil @maisondetto) / Ceramic chair from Call Vermell in Felanitx, Mallorca: “I was roaming the streets of Felanitx in search of a cafe when I passed this beautiful ceramics studio, which I almost didn't go into. I turned around and went in to find a beautiful woman with curly blonde hair showing her young son how to do something at a table. The shop was filled with the most beautiful ceramics, art, and books I have ever seen. I come to find out her name is Antonina and this studio was actually her childhood home but now it is their studio and shop. She returned home to Mallorca after working in cinema in Barcelona to pursue her art and to run the store with her mother and sister, who are also artists. I see a collection of little ceramic chairs she had made and I instantly knew I needed this one without even seeing a price tag. She was €15. (New York could never) I love interiors and furniture (especially chairs), I love ceramics, and I love anything mini so this was the star buy of my travels. And to think I almost didn't go in…”
@colinebach (stylist (clients include Angèle, Omar Sy, Glucose Goddess), costume designer) / Frankie’s Bikinis Christabelle Dress: “So I was going on holidays to Skopelos with my friend Melissa and wanted a long dress that’s flattering to my body shape (I’m bottom heavy) and this was my perfect for my Mamamia meets slutty peasant fantasy !”
