Monday morning! Let’s talk biz, literally.
Biz Sherbert studies style the way a foreign correspondent might survey a new capital: she books the ticket, walks the streets, and files dispatches decoding why locals dress the way they do, and what that says about the economy, the mood, and the memes. A South Carolina native who recently returned to the States after years in London, Biz writes American Style, a few-month-old Substack that already reads like a punchy archive of American dress codes in the wild: Bowery martinis one week, Atlanta arena rock the next. When she’s not roaming, she’s behind a mic co-hosting the cult podcast Nymphet Alumni, a show that can wander from arthouse cinema to secondhand market economics.
Editors call her when they need the clothes-are-culture piece nobody else has clocked yet (see: her Emma Chamberlain profile for The Face). The method is cheerfully analog: close the laptop, follow the impulse, buy the artifact. That explains a recent stack of her receipts that ranges from fuel for LES style-watching to bronzing drops vetted in a friend’s bathroom because TikTok said so.
We asked Biz to open her notebook (and cc statements). Behind the paywall: the bar tab that sparked a status-anxiety mini-essay, the airport glossy she bought instead of scrolling, the merch that doubles as ethnography, and more. Think of it as a field report you can fit in your carry-on. Open up and see what she packed…
