Writing this newsletter brings us so much joy and is a highlight of our week. Huge hugs to those of you who wrote us emails — we love getting them!! Sincere thanks to our new friends on Substack, IG, and TikTok who have shared receipts in our newsletters. Finally, a special shoutout to each and every one of our dedicated paid subscribers. Your support is the backbone that allows us to share What I Actually Bought editions with everyone.
UPDATE ON OUR APP: As most of you are aware, our newsletter is a small slice of what we are building here at Selleb — a receipt-based app where every recommendation is backed by proof of purchase. We are getting so close to launching our first version! This past weekend, we zipped over to NYC to connect with some of our very first cohort of beta users. (As our newsletter subscribers, you’re next in line. Please stay tuned!) This first group is from our hush-hush IG account (not too hard to find if you know where to look ;)), on which we’ve been sharing purchase receipts among ~150 users from 10-15 core friend groups. They’ve been our stalwart supporters from Day 1. You know who you are; we are ever so grateful <3 Their first line-of-attack feedback will be used to refine the experience when we onboard YOU later this spring.
You know the drill -- OUR finds, YOUR finds, and the BEST DEALS — honest reviews backed by receipts. Let’s do this.
What I Actually Bought
Happy Ice Cream: Happy ice cream, sad skin. Our daily dairy (!) jaunts turned our skin into battleground. If you know us, you know ice cream is our Achilles’ heel (and the way to our hearts). Didn’t help our cause that their ice cream AND waffle cones were homemade. A scoop of wholesome nostalgia cradled in freshly caramelized crispiness? How can we resist? Their ice cream flavors were so creative too— think chocobanana, olive oil & cocoa crumble, dark chocolate & orange zest, milk chocolate oatmeal cookie (with the little nibbles nestled inside the ice cream) <3
ANUA Heartleaf Toner Pads: We revealed some super secret skin intel in last week’s paid edition and this product made a cameo. For a good reason because K-skincare junkies swear by this, and now, so do we ;) Did a re-stock this week.
Stella McCartney x Yoshitomo Nara Canvas Bag (similar here here and here): She’ll be the new cool school bag on the block, and you bet Claire’s excited to unveil her this spring. We are punks indeed! Some might even say menaces. Nara has been Claire’s trusted companion, from her angsty middle school phase to her Covid-infested college saga; a constant in the sea of change. Without stating the obvious, Nara’s art hits — it feels off the cuff yet on the nose. Shoutout to good old Poshmark for pulling through with this archival-ish piece.
Toteme Black Smocked Bikini Bottoms (also here and here): Really comfy and a flattering fit, plus can’t beat the price for Toteme! Chloe grabbed this adorable bikini bottom on ssense. It’s always a good idea to buy swimsuits during winter and coats during summer. Buying clothes is like buying stocks: you can scoop up some GREAT deals if you buy things when no one else is.
Phillips Museum DC: If you find yourself in DC before the summer, we HIGHLY recommend checking out Bonnard’s World at The Phillips Collection. Lots of his lesser-known masterpieces from private collections around the globe have been assembled here. It’s a visual knock-out. Plus, the museum itself is fun-sized and perfectly manageable for a midday stroll. Nothing like a beautiful exhibit to turn up our creative dials.
What YOU Actually Bought
@arielkaye (Founder of Parachute Home) / Bottega Veneta Mini Intrecciato Shoulder Bag: "i've been on a self-imposed shopping freeze so far this year but just purchased this bottega bag which i know i will live in this summer. i wear a lot of neutrals and love a pop of color in my accessories and i've worn my red old celine trio bag for years and years. this is a fresh upgrade. plus the cost is a lot cheaper on cettire than bottega!”
@jeremycohen (photographer based in NYC) / Farm to People seasonal box: “It feels good to support local farms while also getting fresh fruits and veggies”
@thistlebelle (model and creator / Marvin Richards Mongolian Coat via eBay (similar here here and here)): “an 80s Marvin Richards mongolian jacket. It was a good price for mongolian, and in perfect condition despite its age. Honestly I haven't stopped wearing it in the months since it arrived. Super warm, chic, and goes with everything.”
@amandakraemer (stylist, artist, writer of
) / Lemaire Castanet Necklace (similar here and here): “I love that this piece adds a little layer of mystery thanks to its' medieval spin on a pouch filled with herbs, crystals or coins, when really I just want to check my lips.”
@audreyhilfiger (founder and florist @audreyinthegarden) / Iron candle stick holders and colored candle sticks: “Iron candle stick holders and colored tapered candle sticks for my bedroom. They are so gorgeous in my room and I love taking photos of them.”
