What I Actually Bought #043
Send nudes breakup socks and take me to church with Tudor cross bling & Sundae School's 4/20 treat for Selleb subs
Greetings from the London fog. Chloe and our mom (BFF) spent some time with family in London this week (while Claire went back to DC to finish up her semester). Daily routine in London = work at café, art museum break, work at café, sleep, repeat.
On this trip, Chloe feasted on a sensory overload smorgasbord, to say the least. Twas the twinkling Tudor-era bling that shone the brightest. It's easy to see how the glittering court of Henry VIII and his stylish wives (all 6!) — especially Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour — could kindle the immortal flair of haute couture houses like Chanel, D&G, and YSL… see below for some snippets.
In honor of 4/20, here’s a special (edible?) treat for you. Our bud Dae, the founder of Sundae School, is rolling out his mochi gummies for nationwide delivery on 4/18. He's offering a blazing 25% off all gummies to Selleb subscribers from 4/18-4/20. Must be 21+. Use code ‘SELLEB25’.
You know the drill -- OUR finds, YOUR finds, and the BEST DEALS — honest reviews backed by receipts. Here we go…
What I Actually Bought
Janine Jansen with the LSO: At the risk of sounding dramatic, this was a performance of a lifetime. For those of you who might not have heard of her, Janine Jansen is a towering figure (literally and metaphorically) in classical music. With her 6’+ frame, she can project the biggest sound but also the warmest and most beautiful tone on her Stradivarius. She truly is a rockstar, and the stars were really aligned for Chloe because 1) Janine Jansen was playing ONE concert in London which coincided with her visit, AND 2) she was playing THE piece (Barber Violin Concerto) that defined Chloe’s violin career (which sadly ended in college). Quick Tip: Despite the sold-out concert, our mom miraculously found TWO tickets on TicketSwap. Worked fabulously. If you ever have a chance to see Janine Jansen in concert, you absolutely must.
Sargent & Fashion at Tate Britain: Many of us might know John Singer Sargent for his war-themed art, but he was actually most known for his exquisite portraits! His focal point was often his subjects’ attire, which he painted with meticulous detail. Turns out, times don’t change much because back in the day, women would buy clothing solely based on what they thought could translate best on canvas. The art of dressing for the frame… or for fame. Canvas —> camera. Quick Tip: If you are 25 and under, don’t forget to sign up for Tate Collective to see any exhibits at either Tate museums for 5£.
Holbein at the Tudor Court: Imitation is the greatest form of flattery? Hans Holbein really did spawn (immortalize) an entire posse of Renaissance portrait artists (men and women) who all took inspiration from (read: copied) him. Lots of paintings at the exhibit were not his but ‘in the style’ of him but worthwhile going for his original sketches and a few of his famous surviving pieces like the painting of Thomas Howard below, the uncle of Anne Boleyn who oversaw her execution trial (!!).
The Vintage: This unassuming store in Le Marais is easily miss-able esp with the scaffolding that surrounds the entire block. It boasts the best and worst name… best because it’s hard to find and worst because it’s hard to find. Helmed by a duo of timeless French gents, this boutique has been spinning upcycled fashion and vintage Levis for over three decades. Bought our brother an army green 100% cotton jacket that fits like a glove and goes with everything. Great basics and capsule wardrobe pieces.
Fruttini: In Paris! They scoop out a colorful array of sorbets and tuck them back into their natural husks… like they never left the fruit. Presentation as the ultimate pièce de résistance. The sorbets are quite sweet, but very refreshing and delish nevertheless — what a midday snack should look like. Concept is 10/10.
What YOU Actually Bought
@hellotefi (creator) / Etsy finds (hair tie and watch choker): “im praying my neck doesnt turn green, and im trying to get more into hair accessories. im watching a lot of k dramas rn and they all have short hair so im getting the itch to cut my hair, hopefully new acccessories can scratch that itch for me- i usually hate chokers because i feel like my face is round and chokers make my face look rounder (summer 2016 was tough). so far ive only received the watch necklace and it's heavy, I dont know if thats good or bad. Lol”
@bondenavant (beauty creator) / Cocokind Rosewater Toner: “As a beauty content creator, I have to test out a lot of shampoos, some that irritate my scalp. The easiest fix for an itchy scalp is spraying rose water on your scalp after washing/towel drying your hair. Rose water is anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and soothing. I love this one by Cocokind. It’s the best budget friendly one I’ve found.”
@elizcardinal (personal stylist, content director @kule, writer of The Corner Booth ) / Vintage Gucci Cosmetic Case (similar here here and here): “I purchased a Vintage Gucci Cosmetic Pouch for $120.72 on eBay at the end of February. I have had the Loro Piana Extra Pocket bag stuck in my head for quite some time, so I decided to get something with a similar-ish structure. I featured many other similar options in my newsletter, The Corner Booth. There are so many to choose from! And if you're traveling, you can use it as a two-for-one: a cosmetic case for the travel part and a little purse for when you reach your destination.”
@nrips (author of Trying to Float, a memoir about growing up in New York's Chelsea Hotel, features editor @hommegirls, writer-at-large @cultured_mag, writer @ nytimes, airmail, the face, interview) / Gucci Strappy Heels from Poshmark (similar here here and here): ““beautiful, flimsy, coy, hurt my toes only a little, nude shoe the new nude dress”
@jodienixon_ (receipt writer, Mob food producer) / Send Nudes Socks: “I've been going through a breakup and bought a load of random stuff really spontaneously, including these socks. Nothing like a spending spree to cure heartache haha!”
If you want to share your awesome purchase(s) and have a chance to be featured in our future newsletters, pls forward your emailed order confirmation(s) to sisters@selleb.com! Feel free to add a one-sentence review. As always, we’ll check in with you to coordinate details before we post.
