What I Actually Bought #045
Hoya Hellville merch, Brita filter but for your hair, and a wishbone toast holder for the bone broth buff
So Claire’s back across the pond with an insider’s report on Georgetown Day.
For those who might not know: Every year, on the last Friday of April, classes at Gtown are put on pause to make room for some serious play before the start of finals. A Hoya holiday. And because there’s something for everyone — darties and parties up the wazoo — it draws in a motley crew (ooo that rhymed) of the college-aged (+ 1-2 years) variety living along the Eastern seaboard. There is also a 98.7% chance that you will bump into old friends (and foes) from other colleges, not to mention the quizzical I-know-you-from-somewhere glances and the quintessential nice-to-meet-yous (although you’ve already met them many times lol) exchanged every hour.
This was Claire’s first and sadly last Georgetown Day since she’s graduating in the fall, and her first two had been impacted by Covid. A crazy fun day that begins (and ends) with the chirping of early birds…. Needless to say, it’ll take the full weekend to pay off the sleep debt you’ve accrued.
With that, let’s get to — OUR finds, YOUR finds, and the BEST DEALS — honest reviews backed by receipts. Let’s do this…
What I Actually Bought
Brandy Melville: Almost wrote Hellville there lol. Georgetown Brandy always has a dependable stash of cute college merch for last-minute planners so had to make a quick pitstop here before the festivities began. You can never have enough school paraphernalia! Also bought a pair of shorts and a top too bc Claire needed some comfy fits cramming for finals….
Call Your Mother: Because what’s a recovery without a carbfest? Cult classic in DC (closest to NYC-caliber bagels you can get?). BEC bagel ftw. If you’ve had this before, you know ;) Stocked up on some extra lox & cream cheese for finals week.
Dumplings & Beyond: Carbfest continues. 10-person dim sum dinner, we ate like pigs, and it came out to $34 each. A steal in Gtown.
202 x Georgetown Day: Gtown day tickets are as elusive as can be, and you pay the price either way… The question is whether it will be in $ or fomo (jomo).
Pizzeria Paradiso (great IG username): One of the first restaurants Claire went to in Georgetown so it’s a nostalgia play. Sunday recovery. Potato pizza = pure comfort food.
What YOU Actually Bought
@sssssoupsssss (soup guru, writer of
, also @sssssaladsssss, and pre-order her book here!) / Victorian Silver-plated 'Wishbone' Toast Rack (similar here and here) from Etsy (seller here): “I recently bought this silver-plate wishbone toast rack!!! Wishbones are beautiful and said to bring good luck - I make bone broth very frequently and have amassed quite an impressive collection. When I came across this functional and beautiful and lucky toast rack on Etsy, I had to buy it immediately (it was a steal, too).”
@zosuen (writer of
, blogger, journalist (@bof @fthtsi @scmpnews)) / Jolie Shower from Healf: “I’ve been going back and forth about this purchase but finally bit the bullet! The water in London is extremely hard and when I was in Hong Kong over the holidays, I noticed a stark difference in how my skin and hair felt (the latter especially). It’s an investment but if it means I shed less, I’ll be satisfied. Very excited to test it out.”
@mattrodbard (writer, founding editor of TASTE, author of Koreatown: A Cookbook, Food IQ, and the newly released Koreaworld: A Cookbook) / Lunch at S&P in NYC: “S&P is legit my favorite between breakfast and lunch spot in NYC - and this order really lived up to my high expectations when I dined there. The chopped olive sandwich is a real crowd pleaser - well for this crowd of one at least. And the coffee is actually good. Note the carrot cake slice at breakfast. Yes, this was our first meal of the day.”
@lissiechappell (brand marketing & communications consultant) / Eagle Creek Packing Organizers: ”I am prepping for an extended multi-country trip and wanted to invest in high quality compression packing cubes and other organization. I will be living out of two backpacks, so I’ve been researching and stocking up on a range of gear for months. I had some old Eagle Creek cubes, but love these newer pieces and highly recommend whether you’re using a big rolling suitcase or playing Tetris, where every inch counts!”
@nicolereber (Vogue calls her “Los Angeles’s Most Colorful Real Estate Agent”) / The RealReal haul (similar Diesel top, Diesel skirt, Gucci gloves, Arnold Scaasi Dress,Versace dress): “I’m going to Paris for a bachelorette and I wanted something that was kind of a combo of Palm Royale / Glenn Martens at Diesels universe. I was excited about the gloves bc I felt like you could wear them with all three outfits.”
