What I Actually Bought #084
What Substack's co-founder actually bought, Girls Rewatch co-host $pends, and the paparazzi love this jacket
Welcome to What I Actually Bought #084.
This week, we’re getting extra meta and featuring none other than… the co-founder and chief writing (!) officer of Substack (!!!), Hamish McKenzie. Excited for this one. The man requires no introduction — he is the reason you are reading these words. A-list celeb/Selleb in our world fs. Without further ado, let’s get into regular programming.
**IMPT REMINDER**: We now have a NEW official app waitlist! Pls fill out this (super) quick form to get on. This is a CHANGE from our previous policy that placed you on the waitlist automatically when you signed up for our newsletter. Users have been getting off in batches.
We’ve Got Proof
A weekly series featuring our favorite receipt of the week on the Selleb app.
Marine Depaz (ex-Rabanne) is the Paris-based founder of the jewelry line Albatroz, a selection of which she showcases below. Albatroz pieces have quickly become regulars in our jewelry rotation, and we have never not gotten compliments when sporting her work. She is a true gem (!), one of our dear friends, ever so stylish, and the kind of person who keeps us laughing long after the party’s over — her reviews of the products on our app are also a belly laugh and a half. Below, one of her recent finds from Vinted, which will have us searching “veste Napoléon” promptly after we finish penning this edition.
@marinedepaz (founder of Albatroz) / Veste Officier Ralph Lauren T.S Vintage from Vinted (similar here here and here): “I have never in my life got more paparazzi pictures taken of me at fashion week than wearing this jacket. Literally this makes you the coolest person in the room instantly. Also surprisingly warm! Got it on Vinted so hard to find the same but if you want a similar one: look up « veste officier » « veste fanfare » « veste cirque » « veste hussard » « veste Napoléon »”

With that, let’s get to what some of the most influential tastemakers on the internet are ACTUALLY buying and the BEST DEALS for the week.
What You Actually Bought
@hamish (co-founder of Substack) / BLUELESS Vintage Round Readers: “I am 43 years old and have only recently discovered that my eyes get less tired and text becomes a lot sharper and larger if I simply wear reading glasses. My vision must have been on a quiet decline for years without me noticing. To test the theory that my life would improve with reading glasses, I bought a three-pack of very basic, very cheap glasses with rectangle frames from the popular shopping site Amazon.com. Indeed, I found that my life did improve. But my aesthetic did not. In an attempt to address this shortcoming, I ordered these Vintage Round Reading Glasses Professor Readers for the very accessible price of fifteen dollars and twenty cents, thinking that if they didn't look good I could simply return them or write it off as a worthy investment in aesthetic exploration. Unfortunately, they made me look dorkier than ever. I have resolved to instead go to a real life shop and try some different options on. In the meantime, I will persevere with a suboptimal in-office look. I have since returned the glasses. 1/10, do not recommend.”
@treytaylor (founder of newly launched fragrance brand Serviette / Custom Embossing Stamp (similar here): ”I'm just about to launch a fragrance brand, Serviette. My branding was all done by @studioselect.co and I had an insignia designed as part of the overall brand to give it a heritage feel. I kept getting targeted ads for a metal embossing stamp that you can use to stamp your initials into a book, but I wanted to fully customize a metal stamp so I could emboss my insignia onto letters, thank you notes, and the like. If this isn't the best way to elevate a sheet of paper, I don't know what is!”
@ameliaplease (comedian + co-host of Girls Rewatch pod) / Cherry Kitten Baby Tees : “Sometimes an Instagram targeted ad comes for you one High Noon deep and you simply feel you must microdose the past and buy some graphic baby tees that remind you of the Rue21 tops you wore at the height of your middle school popularity. Brain rot? Sure. Jesus saves and I spend? No exactly. It’s like wearing a dad shirt but make it bby girl <3.”
@chrisdallariva (data and personalization @ Audiomack, writes Can’t Get Much Higher) / Major Labels: A History of Popular Music in Seven Genres by Kelefa Sanneh: “Kelefa Sanneh is one of the great music critics of the 21st century. And his recent book, an exhaustive history of seven different genres, is just as great as the criticism that you would read in the New York Times or the New Yorker. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever read another writer who seems to have such deep command of so many different genres.”
@roxynavai (founder of PR agency RX studio) / Vintage Dsquared bodysuit: “When it comes to buying new clothes, I’ve recently found it hard to fall in love with new collections and find myself gravitating much more towards vintage designer, or new pieces from the brands I represent. One of my favourite recent discoveries is The Grotesque Archive, introduced to me by my friend and team member Chiara, on a hungover day we spent in New York. It was really one of those days where the last thing I thought I’d do would be to try clothes on — let alone make a purchase — but that all changed once we stepped into their private showroom, tucked away in FiDi. There were so many unique pieces at The Grotesque that I loved, but as soon as I tried on this vintage DSquared2 bodysuit, I knew I had to have it. I’m not one to wear a lot of colour, but somehow the colour pop and the funky, late 2000s graphics across the front sold me on doing something completely different, for once. The first time I wore it was a few weeks later at our RX STUDIO agency party in Toronto — here’s a photo of Chiara and I on that night :)”
