What I Actually Bought #038
Dune afternoon, strawberry tan lines, and Hot and Single on the dance pole
This week, our purchases mostly spanned experiences — movies, concerts, books (unread) and morning coffee runs…With Claire home in the Windy City for her spring break, your Selleb Sisters dove into joint work but also enjoyed a fair share of play too. See what we were up to below <3
You know the drill -- OUR finds, YOUR finds, and the BEST DEALS — honest reviews backed by receipts. Here we go…
What I Actually Bought
Dune: Part Two: Chloe is an AMC A-Lister, hence the zero-cost ticket. Neither of us had seen Dune: Part One (not big sci-fi fans) but gave Two a go because 1) Chloe sees every movie that comes out (yes, including Madame Web) and 2) fomo… didn’t want to miss out on any obscure cultural references. That said, it was so hard for us to take Christopher Walken seriously because…. Hairspray lol. There was also the WSJ film review that we read before going… A big mistake because we just lost it when (as the article warned us) Timothée Chalamet started yelling orders at his troops. Despite the chuckles, the movie was pretty epic with incredible visuals and sound effects. Also… does anyone else agree that the Reverend Mother is really just a glorified stage mom in another universe?? Kris-level dedication…
Gil Shaham Playing Mendelssohn: We grew up playing the violin and cello, and anytime a famous soloist was in town performing a concerto that we had played (or would soon play), you bet our mom was all over it and dragged us to see them. And now? No coercion needed, but we are always scrounging around for discount codes.
A Year on Earth With Mr. Hell by Young Kim: Apparently, this erotic memoir has been selling like hotcakes among artists and the “high-brow” literati. Totally intrigued, we tried to get a copy but discovered that it was sold out everywhere. After weeks of looking, we finally snagged one on Amazon but the delivery date could be as late as mid-April. Very curious to see what the buzz is all about…
Strawberry Tan Line from La Colombe: We’ve outgrown La Colombe tbh, but the one thing that keeps us coming back is the seasonal draft. The Tan Line, if you’re not familiar, is essentially La Colombe’s cold brew topped off with a thin layer of their signature draft latte. And because it’s just a ‘touch’ of latte, the overall flavor is always subtle and yummy. This month’s special is a strawberry oat draft latte, which sounds sweet but as a Tan Line, it’s perfect.
Re/Done Mid Rise Black Baby Bootcut Jeans (secondhand here): Raved about these jeans last week, and found another pair (NWT!) on Poshmark for a steal…
What YOU Actually Bought
@dumbmackenzie (writer and artist, known for her viral diary entries on TikTok which were featured in the NYT) / Tom Yum by Prissana (here and here): "I've been obsessed with the website Fragrantica lately, it's like Wikipedia for perfume- I could sit on there for hours and read the notes of different perfumes and scents. In my searches I saw a perfume that caught my eye and I had to get it. It's called Tom Yum by Prissana, it basically smells like everything in a Tom Yum soup minus the meat (lime, lemon grass, and some jasmine). I only bought a sample bottle because I was scared it would be awful, but I'm going to get the full thing when I get paid (-:”
@imjasondiamond ( “author, editor, speaker, and big eater”, contributor for GQ and New York Magazine’s Grub Street / Le Creuset Classic Skillet 9”: “My little sister recently got married and they asked for money for a honeymoon. I contributed to the fund, but I also felt like I wanted to get them something that they could actually use and be like "Remember when Jason got us this for our wedding" and the first thing my wife and I purchased together was a Le Creuset Dutch oven so I figured I'd start them out with a skillet and see where it goes. I put "This is for when your husband is bad and you need something to clunk him over the head with" because I like old-timey cartoons where women smash men over the head with frying pans. I was told by several members of the family they didn't find the joke funny for some reason or another.”
@christina_holevas (editor and brand consultant, writer of
) / Etsy Deep Scallop Shell Nigh Light: “I really don't like turning on my bathroom light at night (Andrew Huberman would not approve - IYKYK) so I bought myself this little light on Etsy a couple of months ago. It feels like a sort of girly and ethereal thing to have in my apartment, which makes me smile.”
@vesperw (brand partnerships, events, and content strategy for companies like Jennifer Fisher and DVF) / Champagne Christophe Mignon: “My friend is dating a guy who is really into wine - he opened this Sparkling Rosé champagne at a dinner recently and I was really into it. It has the faintest floraly, honey flavor which is so delicate and balanced (I don't know much about wine so I could be describing this all wrong lol). I loved it so much I bought a bottle the following week at Natural Wine Co. in Williamsburg. I don't often buy wine that I don't intend to open the same night, so having a bottle in my fridge for a celebratory occasion feels really special.”
@stef_dagz (comedian, writer, actor, host of Hot and Single, senior editor at Overheard NY) / Sexy Lingerie Set: “i recently started pole dancing classes and within 48 hours I got rid of all the furniture in my kitchen and put up a pole in the middle of my apartment. i feel so sexy and slinky and cool (i'm horrible at it btw), and obviously have jumped the gun entirely and started buying cute outfits to wear when i dance. mostly i just take low light videos of myself in these outfits and send them to my boyfriend, but i like to believe that one day when i'm really good at it they will be evidence of my tenacity to become the my best, sluttiest self. x”
