Up until now, brand collaborations never quite made sense for us. Selleb’s ethos has always been about sharing intel of things people have actually bought and loved (no product placements, no sponcon, and no ads). But when The RealReal reached out to us about a potential partnership, it felt less like a ~business proposition~ and more like reconnecting with an old friend who's witnessed all your fashion phases: the good, the questionable, and the tf was I thinking? Not to mention that we are totally mission-aligned on the REAL and the AUTHENTIC, albeit in different ways ;)
Let’s rewind for a sec. Our relationship with TRR runs deep. We’ve been buying and selling with them for a decade+!!
For those who’ve been with us since Day 1, you might recall our humble (read: cringey) days as teen fashion bloggers back in the early 2010s when Blogspot/Wordpress/Lookbook.nu (wow major tb) were the hotspots, hosting the likes of the Blonde Salad, Man Repeller, and Pink Peonies, and shopping secondhand online hadn’t yet entered the cultural zeitgeist. But yours truly saw a juicy opportunity. In 2013, at age 12/14, we jumped head-first into the online resale game — arbitraging Wildfox Gold Label, Juicy, and Rag & Bone pieces like the mispriced currencies they often were!
But for the luxury and high-end labels, we ofc resorted to The RealReal. And when we launched our startup as a celeb Selleb resale platform in late 2021, we were the first to cite and credit TRR’s 2015 celebrity drop as our OG inspiration. After all, we had gotten our hands on the Alexander McQueen sweater straight from Kendall Jenner’s closet (!!!), and the thrill of owning something worn by our style icon kind of rewired our brain chemistry ngl.
Fast forward to today, and we’ve come full circle with TRR.
For all our new readers, Selleb is no longer a resale app. It has evolved into a social app where you can see everyday, real-life purchases of not just your friends and friends of friends but also some of the coolest tastemakers on the internet. Bottom line: Our app showcases receipts submitted from the chicest users around the world — mostly Gen Z girls in fashion capitals like NYC, LA, London, Seoul, Paris, Milan, and Dubai. User feedback tells us that secondhand deals are some of the best purchases to browse!
This week, we’re dedicating our What I Actually Bought programming to all the fun pieces that our Selleb community has actually bought on TRR (with receipts to show their shopping savvy). Our app is invite-only right now bc we’re curating the first cohort of users who truly get it. If you are obsessed with tracking down the best finds, love discovering what real people are actually buying, and value transparency over all else, you can apply to get on our app here.
P.S. Exactly a year ago, we published an edition dedicated to underrated TRR secondhand hacks (actual TRR tea guysss) because we realized there were so many TRR lovers amongst us in the Selleb community, and we wanted to share the insider knowledge we’ve amassed over the years. Our favorite hack is ALWAYS to filter by “Editor’s Picks” on TRR and sort from low to high (we’re also fans of the price floor).
P.P.S. ICYMI, TRR also launched their own Substack, The RealGirl, if you are looking for more secondhand intel straight from the source. The spring items have sprung and we’re getting ready to purge and shed our winter layers in favor of new (secondhand) energy.
